Hazardous Fuel Reduction in Pescadero Canyon, Carmel-by-the-Sea
About
About Carmel Fire Goats
Carmel Fire Goats is a community-driven initiative led by concerned residents of Carmel-by-the-Sea who recognize a growing and immediate wildfire risk in Pescadero Canyon and surrounding areas.
For decades, the canyon has quietly accumulated dense layers of dry grasses, invasive ivy, and unmanaged undergrowth, fuel that, under the right conditions, could ignite and spread rapidly. With increasingly dry seasons and more extreme fire behavior across California, the time to act is not someday; it is now.
Why This Matters Now
Recent wildfires across the state have shown how quickly overgrown, unmanaged landscapes can turn catastrophic. Pescadero Canyon, beautiful, historic, and deeply woven into the fabric of Carmel-by-the-Sea, is also highly vulnerable due to its steep terrain, dense vegetation, and proximity to homes. Without proactive mitigation, the risk to lives, homes, and habitat continues to rise as we head into the 2026 fire season.
A Natural, Proven Solution
Carmel Fire Goats advocates for the immediate deployment of targeted goat grazing, an environmentally sound, efficient, and cost-effective method for reducing hazardous fuel loads in the area under the sole control of Carmel-by-the-Sea in Pescadero Canyon. Goats naturally:
Clear invasive grasses and brush
Reduce ladder fuels that allow fires to climb into tree canopies
Access steep and difficult terrain where machinery cannot safely operate
This approach has been successfully used across California to create defensible space while preserving the ecological balance of sensitive landscapes.
Community-Led Urgency
This effort is not abstract; it is personal. Residents, volunteers, and local advocates are calling on Carmel-by-the-Sea to prioritize fuel reduction in the area of Pescadero Canyon, which is under the City's full control, as a top civic responsibility. That includes initiating, organizing, qualifying, and funding mitigation efforts, whether directly or through grants and partnerships with qualified vendors and agencies.
The goal is simple but urgent: Act before the 2026 fire season, not after the next disaster.
What We’re Asking
Carmel Fire Goats is urging immediate action to:
Mobilize goat grazing programs in the part of Pescadero Canyon which is under the sole jurisdiction of Carmel-by-the-Sea
Fast-track approvals and coordination with vendors
Spend the budgeted $150,000 funding for comprehensive fuel reduction now
Engage the community in awareness and preparedness efforts
A Safer Carmel Starts Now
Carmel-by-the-Sea is known for its beauty, charm, and stewardship of the natural environment. Protecting it requires proactive decisions today. By reducing hazardous fuels now, through smart, sustainable methods like goat grazing, we can significantly lower wildfire risk and help preserve Pescadero Canyon, surrounding neighborhoods, and homes, for generations to come.
