Hazardous Fuel Reduction in Pescadero Canyon, Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel Fire Goats, based in Carmel-by-the-Sea, is leading a community-driven effort to immediately reduce hazardous fuel loads in the purple/pink-designated area of Pescadero Canyon, which falls entirely under the sole jurisdiction of Carmel-by-the-Sea, before the next wildfire season arrives.
The goal is simple: act now, not later, to reduce the risk of a devastating wildfire threatening Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Hello from Carmel Fire Goats
No one wants to witness a catastrophe here like the fires that devastated Pacific Palisades, Paradise, or the Oakland Hills. Pescadero Canyon has accumulated dense grasses, weeds, ivy, and ladder fuels for decades, creating dangerous wildfire conditions that demand immediate action.
The reality is that Carmel-by-the-Sea already controls the six City parcels along the east rim of Pescadero Canyon — land estimated to contain roughly 80% of the canyon’s hazardous fuel problem. We should immediately clear the land we already control rather than wait another year for every outside agency and jurisdiction to finalize agreements, studies, and coordination plans in the multi-jurisdictional area adjacent to the City-controlled properties. We must act now.
Phase Alpha focuses on rapid fuel reduction on those six Carmel-by-the-Sea parcels using targeted goat grazing, hand crews, and other mitigation methods approved by the Wildfire Preparedness Committee.
Phase Bravo expands the effort through coordination with neighboring canyon landowners and agencies, including Pebble Beach Community Services District, Del Monte Forest Conservancy, CAL AM, and CAL FIRE, to eventually connect fuel reduction zones throughout the canyon as detailed by the Wildfire Preparedness Committee.
Carmel-by-the-Sea’s responsibility is to draw down the $150,000 for hazardous fuel reduction that is a line item in this year's budget for an on-the-ground mitigation effort as quickly as possible. Carmel Fire Goats' role is to help ensure that happens by building awareness, rallying community support, and keeping residents informed and engaged every step of the way.

Meet Mr. Goat. His goatees call him Carmelo.

If Pebble Beach can stage grazing goats along upper Pescadero Canyon by Pescadero Road, Mr. Goat wonders why Carmel-by-the-Sea can't do the same along 2nd Avenue?

Fire Hazard Zone
This is a scary image. When your house insurance is canceled, you'll know why. And when a wildfire decimates Carmel-by-the-Sea, you'll know why as well.
